LLB Accountants knows Darlinghurst
‘Woollahra’ is an aboriginal name. The word means meeting ground or a place where people come and sit. A pioneer speaker of NSW legislative assembly, Sir Daniel Cooper, first named a house he built as the Woollahra house in 1856. Thereafter, as Cooper and his decendants played a significant role in the formation of the suburb, the suburb was later named after Woollahra house. Located about 5 kilometres east of Sydney central business district, Woollahra is today a quiet tree-lined residential suburb boasting a village-style shopping centre.
An inner city suburb, Darlinghurst is situated about 1 kilometre east of the Sydney central business district and Hyde Park. Notable landmarks in the suburb are the Australian Museum and the Sydney Jewish Museum.
Before 19th century, Darlinghurst was known as Eastern Hill and then Henrietta Town. It assumed its present name “Darlinghurst” in honour of Elizabeth Darling, the wife of Governor Ralph Darling. The suffix “hurst” was derived from an old English word “hyrst”, which means wooded area.
Darlinghurst has about 10,060 residents. About 47% of them were born in Australia. The common ancestries of the people were from England (6.9%), New Zealand (4.9%) and Thailand (4.9%). The median age of the population is 34 years which is slightly lower than the national average of 37 years. The median weekly income is $1,109 for individuals and $2,694 for families. The employed people work in diverse fields such as professionals (42%), managers (18%), clerical and administrative workers (11%) and community service workers (9%).
Buses from the Eastern suburbs which passes through Oxford Street before going to the central business district serve Darlinghurst well. Bus from Circular Quay, Bondi Beach, Railway Square and Bronte also pass through Darlinghurst. Although there is no train station in Darlinghurst, the King Cross railway station is just over the northern edge. Driving and walking are popular with residents in getting around.
Oxford Street is the hub of commercial activity. Commercial activities are also found in Victoria Street, Flinders Street, Crown Street, Cleveland Street and Darling Road. Many fashion retailers like Spunky Bruiser and the Clothes Library can be found in Darlinghurst. A variety of restaurants and cafes are situated in Darlinghurst, namely Zushi, Big Poppa’s and Madame Shanghai. Darlinghurst is famous for its pubs and nightclubs including Shady Pines Saloon, Green Park Hotel and Darlo Bar. Oxford Street is well-known worldwide for its annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival.
Most of Darlinghurst’s housing are flats, units and apartments (75.6)%. The rest are semi-detached and terrace houses (21%) and detached houses (3%).
